Care 2 Share Used Toy Drive was created to bring joy in the form of like-new used toys, books and stuffed animals, wrapped up for Christmas and delivered to the inner-city children of Richmond.

Once received, all donations are gift wrapped and tagged according to age, then delivered to the children before Christmas by ministries such as Caritas, Friends of the Homeless, Northside Outreach Center and others who serve the inner-city children of Richmond.

The success of this ministry is determined by the amount of donations and the hard work of our volunteers. Please consider helping this ministry in the following ways:
Donate toys, books and stuffed animals of your own and/or collect from those you know.
Donate boxes, Christmas wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, wrapping tape, and batteries to help get our presents ready.
Donate your time to sort, wrap and tag gifts (See missions main page for dates).

ALL DONATIONS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Each toy must be in a bag or box with all parts and pieces contained therein.
Each toy must be clean and in good working order.
Each toy must appear to be new – no scratches, dents, writing, etc.
Books and stuffed animals must not have writing, chewed corners/ears, etc.

Donations may be left outside of the Missions Room in the South Hall at WEAG or at Jennifer Funk's home in the West End. Please call 804-270-3110 or E-mail Jennifer Funk to schedule a drop-off time or to learn more about this ministry.

Friends of the Homeless provides a nutritious lunch once a week to the poor and hungry people of the inner city of Richmond. We meet weekly at WEAG and transport food (prepared by people in our congregation) to a downtown location to serve lunch for the homeless. Each week has its own recipe and different rotations of people to provide the food.
We serve prepared meals on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays and the 3rd Thursday of each month. On the 1st Thursday a bag dinner is made at WEAG and distrIbuted at the downtown location. If you are interested in getting involved with this ministry please Contact Us

We need your help in encouraging WEAG deployed soldiers who are far from home!
3 times a year we would like to send care packages to our deployed soldiers that are serving our country in far off lands. The Operation Hope Ministry needs help in 2 different ways in order to be able to do this:
•Donations made from the list below
•People to come and help us pack the boxes.

Click here for a list of needed items for Operation Hope. All of the items on the list are a blessing to our soldiers. Purchase a few or many and drop them off at any of the missions collection boxes at the church. Please label them "Operation Hope."

OPERATION VETERANS AFFAIRS

Our veterans are important to us! They served their country well and now they need us to give them a little encouragement. 3 times a year, in conjunction with Operation Hope, we will pack bags with specific items that the Vets have said that they need, and deliver them to McGuire Veterans Hospital.

Click here for a list of items needed for Operation VA. All donations may be dropped off at the missions collection boxes at either end of the church. Please mark your donations "Operation VA."

We also need your help keeping the addresses of our deployed WEAG soldiers current. If you have a family member or a friend that is deployed military personal and would like for them to get a box from us from time to time or have any questions about how to get involved

The stereotype of the homeless as lazy, mentally ill or simply far-removed from our lives isn't always accurate. The homeless include young, old, single, families, transients and the working poor. Fortunately, Richmond has the ability to provide emergency shelter for all those in crisis. Unlike larger urban areas, the problem of homelessness is not insurmountable here. CARITAS is helping to ensure shelter for everyone in our community, no matter why they need it.

Educational and therapeutic activities for disabled students in Ungaran

January 16 - January 30, 2010

Ungaran Disable School is located in Ungaran Regency, Semarang. It is about 10 km south away from the city centre of Semarang. This School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Ungaran and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disable children and youth to struggle for their future. It is mainly funded by the Central Java department of health. We would like to host foreign volunteers because we believe that their interaction with the children, during education and vocational classes and other therapeutic activities will be of great benefit as our students have little or no chances to meet and live with people from other cultures. The intercultural dimension that their presence will generate will also be welcomed and valued by the local staffs. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff, particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching very basic conversation in English, helping teachers in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc . Volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. It will also give opportunity for the international volunteers about the treatment that should be done by the families of disabled children.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the education activities of the disabled students related with Indonesian culture and customs in general.

For more details about this projects, please visit : www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-indonesia.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400, 604-628-7400

New Men's and Women's underwear
Large Backpacks
Blankets

Last night WRIC aired a segment and indicated there are approximately 1100 Homeless people in Richmond. We have our own "Tent City" just like you see on the News in California, only they don't even have tents! Many of them sleep out in the elements, some have apartments, motel rooms, or sleep in their cars but do not have enough food or clothing. It takes so little to make a difference in their lives and they are so grateful for anything that we do for them.

Please e-mail this post to your family, friends and co-wrokers. I am finding that people really do want to help, they may just not know how or where. We have made a comittment to supply 150 lunches and clothing, lotions, toilet paper, etc every Sunday. If you would like to participate as an individual or form a Team, we promise you it will change their lives as well as your own. We are just a famly that started out providing 100 lunches on a Sunday back in April and have had a lot of people join our efforts and we believe that with their continued support and participation we can honor our committment.

If you have any quetions, please give me a call at 814-2193.
Have a blessed day!

Become a Youth Distance Mentor - Pledge Sigma Theta Rho (All US States)

We are looking for committed men and women ages 18 and older to pledge SIGMA THETA RHO and become part of our family of distance mentors for youth all over the country. Sigma (STR) is not only looking to provide support to some of our young people, but it is our goal to inspire and challenge people to become more active in doing community service in their own neighborhoods and to position ourselves as a leader in service. We have challenged ourselves to attract at least one person in every state who will help us build a firm foundation for this organization to grow on and the response has been tremendous so far. We have managed to attract about 70 people in various states including: New York (our home base), New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Hawaii and Iowa. We also have members in Egypt and Nigeria. The response has been so great that we have extended our deadline to NOVEMBER 5TH!!

STR's pledge process is unique. It simply requires participation and communication!

Every pledge must earn 116 points by May 1, 2010 in order to be crossed over into full membership. You earn points by: (a) responding to email that we send; (b) posting to our message boards on Facebook and/or MySpace; (c) doing community service in your own neighborhood and (d) serving as a distance mentor to our young people by consistently writing letters to them, providing advice and direction where you can!! THAT'S ALL. Pledging doesn't cost anything but your time and commitment to serve!

Every member will also be hands on in helping us build a solid foundation for us to grow on. This includes establishing policies and procedures for future operations and planning traditions that we will follow. We ask for your opinion on everything and what you say counts. We'll even be planning an annual conference where members from all over the world will be able to come together to discuss ideas and to let our hair down.

We have managed to attract some very wonderful people. All that's missing is YOU! Won't you join us??

If you are interested in pledging, please send an email with YOUR NAME - PLEDGE 2010 in the subject line. We will answer you within 24 hours and our journey will begin. You will be pleasantly surprised!!!

Local Food Co-op Intern (Goochland Courthouse)

The Center for Rural Culture will be providing local food throughout the winter months to citizens who live and/or work in the Goochland Courthouse (and surrounding) area(s) through the Goochland Farmers Market Winter Co-Op program. Our program is completely automated for both our vendors and customers. We will be holding the vendor drops and customer pick-ups at the Goochland Family Services Building on River Road West in Goochland Courthouse.

We are looking for an intern to act as our Site Coordinator. We are looking for someone one day a week on Tuesdays (November through April) from approximately 12L30pm-6:30pm (with an hour break from 2:30-3:30). Responsibilities would include checking off vendor drop off orders on corresponding paperwork, and then assisting customers with their order pick-ups. A report would need to be sent to our manger at the end of the day on Tuesdays via email.

This would be a tremendous opportunity for someone who is interested in learning about the local food system. They would have the opportunity to work with both vendors and customers. As the site would be located at the place where the Goochland Food Pantry is housed, the Site Coordinator would also have the opportunity to learn more about how a food bank operates. This experience would be invaluable for someone who is possibly considering working at a farmers market or for other organization that provides local food to consumers.

There will be a small stipend for this position, as well as free membership in the Co-op program. This would fulfill the internship requirements for the Horticulture Technology degree at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Applicants who live in or very near the Goochland Courthouse area will be given priority.

Interested parties should contact me via the email or phone number below as soon as possible.
Once I have enough clothes I will set up a date to meet with these mothers and give them what they need. This is very important to me because I feel like teenage parents are looked down upon, and being a teen mother myself, I know that there are some good mothers out there that just need some guidance. My volunteer program will not be just to give them baby items but to also meet with them and talk to them about any problems they may be having and trying to help. We will hold play groups for the children. I just really need some help getting this program started. I am also donating baby items myself.

Discovery Studios, the internal production company for all of the Discovery-owned channels, is producing a series of hour-long documentary style shows about hoarding, which will air on TLC. We are currently recruiting people who would like to participate.

A potential storyline could revolve around a situation where one family member is a hoarder and the rest of the family is having trouble coping. Or, it could be a family where multiple members are hoarders. In the most extreme cases, there may be a situation where the hoarder has been given an ultimatum to stop hoarding or else be evicted, cut off financially or divorced.

In the course of the show, we want to our viewers to understand why people hoard things, what steps can be taken to deal with a serious hoarding situation and how shining a light on this common problem can lead to positive change for the people involved. Depending on the situation, we may be able to assist with finding a therapist or clean-up crew that can help guide the hoarder down a healthier road.
We understand the very personal and sometimes embarrassing nature of this issue and guarantee that we will treat all characters involved in our program with respect.

If you or someone you know is interested in discussing the project further with the producers, please contact amy_dickson@discovery.com or 240-662-4471. Thank you.

Project 3rd World Child Needs Volunteers! (RVA)

Project 3rd World Child (P3WC) is an up and coming not for profit corporation looking for volunteers to make our dreams a reality, and the world a better place.

Our mission is to empower women and children of developing countries by providing them their necessary educational and fundamental needs. We are very excited about connecting in Richmond and worldwide. We have excited projects ahead, but we need support! In a previous project P3WC went to Malawi, Africa and helped build a village shelter. We bought bricks, maze, employed a local bricklayer to build this shelter. Our next project will be travelling to La Perla, Puerto Rico hopefully over Christmas break, funds permitting, to help out local orphanages. Our long term goals are to be able to provide grants for women in 3rd world countries to receive education and to provide assistance in building schools in this area.

Currently we are looking for website help (you can check out our current situation and what we've done in the past at www.project3rdworldchild.org).

AND legal assistance on our 1023 form to become a 501c3. We've kindly received help from Williams and Mullen through the Pro Bono Clearing House to complete our Articles of Incorporation and our By laws. They both have been submitted to the state and we are waiting for our certificate to arrive. Honestly, we are at a loss with these legal terms and need your help.

We are also looking for volunteers interesting in fundraising, promoting, grant proposal writing...oh it goes on and on. Students need to log some hours, get in touch with us! Employers will know your potential if you're willing to donate your time to a selfless cause! Business if you would like to donate any services or monetarily you would be helping a great cause and would be greatly appreciated!

If this sounds exciting to you and you'd like to contribute in some way contact me, Amber O'Hara @ oharaphoto@gmail.com or Maryam Khosravipour at maryam@project3rdworldchild.org

We are looking for someone to trade house/petsitting duties. We have 5 cats and 2 dogs and it's difficult to find a trustworthy volunteer or reasonable service to stay overnight, walk dogs 2x a day, etc. In the past, we have shared this responsibility with friends...when they go on vacation, we sit for them and, when we go, they help us. This would be a give-and-take, volunteer situation. That is, no exchange of money, just the care of and concern for pets. So, if you love animals, have a zoo of your own and need a vacation, let's talk.
No agencies please.

While many children living in orphanages have lost their parents, others were given up because their parents couldn't afford to care for them. You can make a difference by working directly with the children or by in a support capacity. Lets offer these children the chance for a better life by providing them with an education and better prospects for employment later in life. It doesn't matter if you choose to work with the children, develop programs, raise funds, or raise social awareness about the problem, you just need to care in order to make a difference.
