This is a well written and well documented history of Southampton County. The narrative is easy to read and easy to follow.

Much of the book describes the County relative to the event of 21 August 1831, the Nat Turner Rebellion. Many incidents prior to 1831 are identified as precedents to the Rebellion, and occurrences after the Rebellion are likewise attributed. This should be considered required reading for information about the Rebellion.
