This beautiful Noah’s Ark and its 10 pairs of animals were handmade by an artisan who was from the Blue Ridge of Virginia. She has signed and dated the piece on the bottom as follows: Betsy Balsdon, May 1991. The wood of the ark is a hard wood while the animals are hand carved (and painted) of a lighter weight wood. The total ark is approximately 20” long and 10” wide at its widest. The ark top, that is removable, measures 12” x 4 3/4”, with the widest part of the top’s roof being 6”. The ladder, also removable, is approximately 9” long.
I purchased this piece from the artisan in 1991, not long after she had completed it. Overall, the piece is in excellent condition. Only two small repairs were made to the feet of the kangaroos (as I’ve shown in a pic). And one of the ears of a giraffe was slightly knicked-again, as seen up close in a pic. It was retouched with matching paint.
Also, if arranged in a certain manner, all the animals and the ladder can fit inside the ark. Though intended more as a collectible, it could easily be enjoyed by a young person. I have enjoyed this piece for almost 30 years but due to some downsizing have decided to sell it. I am asking much less than what I paid for it. Cash only. All sales final.
