Our Farm, Whispers of Eden, located in Powhatan, 23139 has opened reservations for spring 2026 Meishan piglets!
Why Meishans?
They Have the Absolute Best Flavored Meat of All Breeds of Hogs!
Meishan are a rare, ancient Heritage livestock breed. They were developed over centuries to have amazing traits and characteristics that other breeds simply can not compete with. Meishan meat is a delicacy around the world, often called the Kobe Beef of Pork. Meishans have been selectively bred over time for profligacy (Most Offspring), temperament (Docile, Gentle) and flavor (World Renowned Best).
The Meishan defies all typical descriptions of swine behavior:
-Meishans that receive proper nutrition have the lowest environmental impact of ANY hog breed on pastures and woodlots. Meishan pigs are a true grazing hog, they thrive on pasture. They are very adaptable to dry lot production as well.
-Their growth typically outpaces that of other popular heritage breeds, hitting meat weights in a timely manner. At full adult weight they are around 450lbs-550lbs (or more; some at 700+lbs). Many are processed at 12 to 14 Months with weights up to 400. They can be processed earlier at lighter weights, though usually not as cost effective.
-Their docile nature requires less infrastructure and manpower. They do not test fences. Meishans do not harass or attack other livestock. Adult Meishans do not squeal or scream (unless in heat).
-They are sedentary and sleep most of the day. You often have to wake them at feeding time.
-Meishan Sows are documented to have superior mothering abilities, setting them apart from other heritage breeds. They are sexually mature younger than other breeds and produce the largest number of offspring per a farrow, with typically all surviving and thriving.
More on Meishan Meat Value...
Meishan meat is an incomparable combination of tenderness, succulence and flavor. Meishans produce an intensely micro-marbled red meat pork. Meishan lard and fats are significantly lighter, finer and render at lower temperatures than other breeds. The result is incredibly tender meat as compared to more common swine breeds. Currently in Virginia, Prices per a Lb. range from $16-$22; depending on given cut and farm.
Meishan banyou (highest grade oil / lard derived from caul fat) is prized in baking and cooking for its finer grain and lighter-on-the-pallet taste than commercial hog lards.
